La celebración del Día de la APS se remonta al 6 de septiembre de 1978 en Alma Ata, Rusia, donde autoridades de salud de distintos puntos del planeta se convocaron en una Conferencia Mundial para abordar la problemática de salud en el mundo y definir las líneas de acción orientadas a enfrentarla.
El 2008, mediante resolución exenta Nº 354, el Gobierno de Chile estableció por primera vez el día de la Atención Primaria con fecha 6 de septiembre.
